Kudluru Sri Rama Temple

Culkey Foundation has been working with the Kudluru Rama temple for the past 8 Months.

Developmental Works:

Cleared the temple premises of debris, weeds, plastic pieces etc,.
Removed Graffiti from walls & Did an Acid Wash
Removed weeds growing on the temple structure
Built a ‘in-house’ garden to grow flowers for worship & Fenced it
Toilet Reconstruction Started
Pooja to Deity was done only in Morning, now it is being done in the morning and evening as Poojari is Renumerated
All Necessary Pooja Items like Oil, Ghee, Flowers, are given
Prasadam is prepared daily (Calendar Day wise – Puliogare, Curs Rice, Sweet Pongal, Coconut Rice, Lemon, Rice) One item a day on rotation and distributed
The Localities have joined hands in maintaining the Temple and a sense of ownership has come back
Deepavali and Vishnu Deepam Festival celebrated with Pomp and Glory
Overall Footfall for Deepavali 200+, for Vishnu Deepa 300+
Temple is on Social Media, has a separate Account on Koo and Pooja’s etc are posted.

About the temple

The historical and legendary Sri Sarvaguna Rama Temple in Kudluru was built around the 4th-5th century and has a rich history. It is of the famous temples built by the royal family of the Ganga’ Empire.

It is said that this temple was built in a single night and further this temple was developed during the reign of the famous Chola rulers Raja Raja Chola and Rajendra Chola.

From the reference inscription, we know that the village of Kudluru was an Agrahara named Rajaraja Chaturvedi Mangalam during the Chola period.

A reference to Vira Ballala, a Hoysala family, giving substantial endowments to the temple is written in an inscription on the temple wall.

Also, Vijayanagara kings also developed the temple. On the temple premises, there are several Tamil and Kannada inscriptions from Gangas’, Cholas, Hoysalas and Vijayanagara periods.

Even today, historical fossils such as old stone idols, and inscriptions can be found on the temple premises.

According to legend, Jatayu in the Ramayana lost a fight to Ravana and waited until Sri Rama arrived, helpless.

Sitamate was abducted by Lankeshwara Ravana and carried away to Sri Lanka

Jatayu bird settled in the holy place of Kudlur; it is believed that after giving darshan Lord Rama also cremated Jatayu here as a symbol of this even now “Budigudde” is next to the temple.

This soil has medicinal properties which can be seen to cure many ailments miraculously. “Yajnavalkya Maharishis” performed penance here, “Kanva Maharishis” worshipped Sri Rama in the holy temple of Sri Ramadevara in Kudluru

Another version says that the temple of Sri Rama is one of the oldest temples in the region and is said to have been built by Surya Pandita, a Dandanayaka.

An inscription mentions Manavala Rama.

ಕೂಡ್ಲೂರು ಐತಿಹಾಸಿಕ, ಪುರಾಣ ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ದ ಶ್ರೀ ಶರಗುಣ ರಾಮದೇವರ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನವು ಸರಿಸುಮಾರು 4-5ನೇ ಶತಮಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಲಾಗಿತ್ತು ಸಾವಿರಾರು ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಇತಿಹಾಸವನ್ನು ಒಳಗೊಂಡಿದ್ದು. ದಕ್ಷಿಣ ಭಾರತದ ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ದ ರಾಜಮನೆತನ “ಗಂಗ ಸಾಮ್ರಾಜ್ಯ”ಅರಸರಿಂದ ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಿದ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ಸುಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದಾಗಿದೇ.

ಈ ಗುಡಿಯನ್ನು ಒಂದೇ ರಾತ್ರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಿರುವ ಉಲ್ಲೇಖವಿದೆ ತಿಳಿಸಿದೆ ಮುಂದುವರೆದು ಈ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನವನ್ನು ಚೋಳ ಸಾಮ್ರಾಜ್ಯದ ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧ ದೊರೆಗಳಾದ ರಾಜ ರಾಜ ಚೋಳ ಮತ್ತು ರಾಜೇಂದ್ರನ ಚೋಳನ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಅವೃದ್ಧಿಪಡಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಕೂಡ್ಲೂರು ಗ್ರಾಮವು ಚೋಳರ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ರಾಜರಾಜ ಚತುರ್ವೇದಿ ಮಂಗಳಂ ಹೆಸರಿನ ಅಗ್ರಹಾರವಾಗಿತ್ತು ಎಂಬ ಉಲ್ಲೇಖ ಶಾಸನದಿಂದ ನಮಗೆ ತಿಳಿಯುತ್ತದೆ.

ಹೊಯ್ಸಳ ಮನೆತನದ ವೀರ ಬಲ್ಲಾಳ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನಕ್ಕೆ ಸಾಕಷ್ಟು ದತ್ತಿಗಳನ್ನು ನೀಡಿರುವ ಉಲ್ಲೇಖ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನದ ಗೋಡೆಯ ಮೇಲಿನ ಶಾಸನದಲ್ಲಿ ಬರೆಯಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಅಲ್ಲದೆ ವಿಜಯನಗರದ ಅರಸರು ಸಹ ಕಾಲಕ್ರಮಣ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನವನ್ನು ಅಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿಪಡಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನದ ಆವರಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಗಂಗರಸರು, ಚೋಳರು ,ಹೊಯ್ಸಳರು ಹಾಗೂ ವಿಜಯನಗರ ಕಾಲದ ಹಲವಾರು ತಮಿಳು ಮತ್ತು ಕನ್ನಡ ಶಾಸನಗಳಿರುವುದುಂಟು.

ಇಂದಿಗೂ ಸಹ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನದ ಆವರಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಹಳೆಯ ಶಿಲಾಮೂರ್ತಿಗಳು ,ಶಾಸನಗಳು ವೀರಗಲ್ಲುಗಳು ಮುಂತಾದ ಐತಿಹಾಸಿಕ ಪಳೆಯುಳಿಕೆಗಳನ್ನು ಕಾಣಬಹುದಾಗಿದೆ.

ಪೌರಾಣಿಕವಾಗಿ ರಾಮಯಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುವ “ಜಟಾಯು ಪಕ್ಷಿಯು” ರಾವಣನೋಡನೇ ಕಾದಾಡಿ ಸೋತು ಅಶಕ್ತನಾಗಿ ಶ್ರೀ ರಾಮ ಬರುವ ತನಕ ಕಾದು ಸಿತಾಮಾತೇಯನ್ನು ಲಂಕೇಶ್ವರನು ಅಪಹರಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಹೊದ ವಿಷಯವನ್ನು ತಿಳಿಸಿ ಕೊನೆಯುಸಿರಿಳೆಯುವ ಮುನ್ನ ಶ್ರೀರಾಮನು ಜಟಾಯುವಿಗೇ ಕೋನೆಯಾಸೇ ಏನೇಂದು ಕೇಳಿದಾಗ ಜಟಾಯು ಪಕ್ಷಿಯು ನಿನ್ನ ವಿಶ್ವರೂಪವನ್ನು ನೋಡಬೇಕೇಂದು ಕೇಳಿದಾಗ ರಾಮನು “ಶಂಕಚಕ್ರಗಧಾಹಸ್ತ ವಿಶ್ವರೂಪ ನಾರಾಯಣಸ್ವಾಮೀಯಾಗಿ ಶರಗುಣ ರಾಮದೇವರಾಗಿ “ದರ್ಶನವನ್ನು ನೀಡಿ ಕೂಡ್ಲೂರು ಪುಣ್ಯಸ್ಥಳದಲ್ಲಿ ನೆಲೆನಿಂತು ಜಟಾಯು ಪಕ್ಷಿಯ ದಹನ ಕಾರ್ಯವನ್ನು ಇಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ನಡೆಸಿರುತ್ತಾರೇ ಇದರ ಪ್ರತೀತಿಯಾಗಿ ಈಗಲೂ ಸಹ “ಬೂದಿಗುಡ್ಡೇ” ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನದ ಪಕ್ಕದಲ್ಲಿದೇ .

ಈ ಮಣ್ಣು ಔಷಧಿಗುಣವನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದು ಇದರಿಂದ ಹಲವಾರು ರೋಗ ರುಜಿನಗಳು ವಾಸಿಯಾಗಿರುವ ಪವಾಡವನ್ನು ಕಾಣಬಹುದು. “ಯಜ್ಞವಲ್ಕ್ಯ ಮಹರ್ಷಿಗಳು” ಇಲ್ಲಿ ತಪಸ್ಸು ಮಾಡಿದ್ದು ,”ಕಣ್ವ ಮಹರ್ಷಿಗಳು “ಶ್ರೀರಾಮನನ್ನು ಆರಾಧಿಸಿರುವ ಪುಣ್ಯಸ್ಥಳ ಕೂಡ್ಲೂರಿನ ಶ್ರೀ ರಾಮದೇವರ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನ .

ಶ್ರೀ ರಾಮದೇವರ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನ ಈ ಭಾಗದ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಪುರಾತನ ದೇವಾಲಯ ಎಂಬ ಹೆಗ್ಗಳಿಕೆಗೆ ಪಾತ್ರವಾಗಿದೆ ಮತ್ತು ಇದನ್ನು ಸೂರ್ಯ ಪಂಡಿತ ಎಂಬ ದಂಡನಾಯಕ ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಿದನು ಎಂಬ ಉಲ್ಲೇಖವಿದೆ ಒಂದು ಶಾಸನದಲ್ಲಿ ಮನವಲ ರಾಮ ಎಂಬ ಉಲ್ಲೇಖವಿದೆ.
